Netflix’s first Telugu original series, Super Subbu, arrives with a refreshingly bold premise and delivers on nearly every front. Directed by Mallik Ram and led by a terrific Sundeep Kishan, this seven-episode dramedy takes on sex education in small-town India with wit, warmth, and genuine emotional depth. Backed by a stellar ensemble cast and a story that isn’t afraid to tackle uncomfortable conversations, Super Subbu is one of the most refreshing regional OTT offerings of the year.

Super Subbu is a heartfelt and often hilarious Telugu series that follows Subbu, a government-appointed sex education officer, as he navigates the conservative village of Maakipur. With outstanding performances from Sundeep Kishan, Murali Sharma, and Mithila Palkar, along with sharp writing that balances comedy and social commentary, the show tackles a subject Indian entertainment rarely touches with honesty and empathy. Anchored by a moving father-son relationship and strong supporting turns from Getup Srinu, Brahmanandam, and Sampoornesh Babu, Super Subbu is an entertaining, meaningful watch that leaves audiences invested from start to finish.

Plot Summary

Subramanyam “Subbu” Chillukuri (Sundeep Kishan) is appointed as a government Sex Education Officer and posted to Maakipur, a conservative Telangana village where even discussing intimacy is treated as taboo. As Subbu attempts to run awareness sessions in the face of suspicion and resistance, he also confronts a strained relationship with his father, Kukkuteshwar Rao, a traditional schoolteacher who represents an entire generation’s silence around these topics. Balancing government duty, village politics, and personal history, Subbu’s journey becomes as much about self-discovery as it is about changing mindsets.

Performances: Every Actor Shines

Sundeep Kishan delivers one of the most understated and effective performances of his career as Subbu. Rather than playing the role as a confident reformer, he brings vulnerability and honesty to the character, letting his hesitations and doubts feel real. It’s a performance that keeps the audience emotionally invested throughout the series.

Murali Sharma is outstanding as Kukkuteshwar Rao, Subbu’s conservative father. His restrained, quietly powerful portrayal gives the father-son dynamic its emotional weight, avoiding stereotype and bringing real humanity to a difficult character.

Mithila Palkar brings a warm, grounded sincerity to her role as Swathi. Her scenes exploring women’s agency are among the show’s most memorable, delivered with a naturalism that elevates the writing around her.

Getup Srinu is a scene-stealer, landing some of the series’ biggest laughs with effortless comic timing.

Brahmanandam and Sampoornesh Babu make the most of their appearances, blending seamlessly into the story and adding extra charm and humour whenever they’re on screen.

Together, this ensemble cast turns Super Subbu into a genuinely well-acted, character-driven series.

Technical Craft

Direction

Mallik Ram handles a genuinely tricky subject with care, building a lived-in village setting filled with authentic characters rather than caricatures. His direction allows humour to emerge naturally from situations and relationships rather than forced gags.

Writing

The writing confidently blends comedy with sensitive social themes like menstruation, reproductive health, and generational misinformation, handling them with maturity while still keeping the tone accessible and entertaining.

Performances & Casting

The casting is a major strength, with each actor — from the leads to the supporting players — adding distinct value and personality to the narrative.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Bold, rarely explored subject handled with empathy and humour
  • Outstanding performances across the entire cast
  • Authentic small-town setting and lived-in characters
  • Emotionally resonant father-son storyline
  • Comedy that grows naturally from character rather than slapstick

Weaknesses:

  • Some subplots in the later episodes could have been tightened
  • A few emotional threads leave room for further exploration in future seasons

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.5/5 Stars

Super Subbu is a bold, funny, and big-hearted series that tackles an important subject with rare honesty. Backed by career-best work from Sundeep Kishan, a moving performance from Murali Sharma, and strong support from Mithila Palkar, Getup Srinu, Brahmanandam, and Sampoornesh Babu, the show succeeds in starting a conversation Indian entertainment has long avoided. A must-watch for anyone looking for a series that’s entertaining, meaningful, and refreshingly different.
