Netflix just dropped the trailer of Inspector Zende, and it’s everything a gritty thriller should be — tense, quirky, nostalgic, and action-packed. Directed and written by Chinmay Mandlekar, the film is loosely inspired by the real-life pursuit of Charles Sobhraj by Mumbai Police Inspector Madhukar Zende.

The trailer instantly pulls you into a retro-styled Mumbai, where instinct mattered more than technology, and a cop’s grit and jugaad (resourcefulness) could outwit even the most elusive criminals.

Manoj Bajpayee as Inspector Zende

Manoj Bajpayee, one of India’s most acclaimed actors, takes on the role of Inspector Zende, a sharp-witted, street-smart Mumbai cop. Known for his intensity and versatility, Bajpayee brings both humor and bravery to the role.

Speaking about his character, he shared:

“What fascinated me about Inspector Zende was that he wasn’t chasing glory — he was just doing his job, yet caught one of the most notorious criminals twice. His bravery, humour, and that unmistakable Mumbai flavour make his journey truly inspiring.”

Bajpayee’s effortless transformation into Zende is already being hailed as one of the highlights of the trailer.

Jim Sarbh as the Swimsuit Killer

Facing off against him is Jim Sarbh, who plays Carl Bhojraj, the flamboyant and stylish swimsuit killer loosely modeled on Charles Sobhraj. Sarbh’s ability to play layered, charming yet dangerous characters makes him the perfect foil for Bajpayee’s grounded cop.

The cat-and-mouse dynamic between Zende and Carl is the heartbeat of the story — one instinctive, the other calculating; one rooted in Mumbai’s streets, the other an international fugitive.

The Film’s Tone & Setting

The trailer suggests that Inspector Zende is not just a thriller, but also a celebration of Mumbai’s police force and their eccentric camaraderie.

Expect:

  • Quirky aliases & disguises used by Zende’s team.
  • Slapstick, comical moments that balance the tension.
  • A retro chase across cities, ending dramatically in Goa.
  • A nostalgic reminder of an era before CCTV and cyber forensics, where instinct was the only weapon.

Supporting Cast

The film boasts a stellar supporting cast, adding layers of humor, drama, and intensity:

  • Sachin Khedekar
  • Bhalchandra Kadam
  • Harish Dudhade
  • Onkar Raut
  • Bharat Savale
  • Nitin Bhajan
  • Girija Oak
  • Vaibhav Mangale

Their camaraderie promises to make the story as entertaining as it is thrilling.

Director’s Vision

Director Chinmay Mandlekar describes the story as having all the ingredients of a gripping film:

“A larger-than-life cop, a slippery antagonist, and an unforgettable era of Mumbai. But what really stayed with me was the camaraderie, the small moments, and the quirks of the people involved.”

His approach ensures that the film is not just a chase story, but also a character-driven narrative filled with warmth and humor.

OTT Release Date & Platform

  • Release Date: September 5, 2025
  • Streaming Platform: Netflix
  • Produced by: Jay Shewakramani & Om Raut

This global release ensures that Inspector Zende will bring an iconic Mumbai story to the world stage.

Why Inspector Zende Trailer Works

The trailer succeeds because it:

  • Highlights Manoj Bajpayee’s powerful yet witty performance.
  • Introduces Jim Sarbh as a stylish yet menacing villain.
  • Balances gritty thrills with nostalgic humor.
  • Showcases the retro Mumbai vibe with authenticity.

The Inspector Zende trailer is a thrilling, entertaining, and nostalgic first look at a story that deserves to be told. With Manoj Bajpayee at the helm and Jim Sarbh as his dangerous adversary, the film promises a cat-and-mouse chase filled with wit, charm, and suspense.

If the trailer is this good, September 5 on Netflix will surely be a date thriller fans cannot miss.
