Malayalam cinema’s most beloved gang of misfits is back, and this time they’re travelling through time. Aadu 3, the much-anticipated third chapter in Midhun Manuel Thomas’s cult franchise, arrives with bigger ambitions, grander visuals, and a narrative that dares to take Shaji Pappan and his chaotic crew somewhere no one expected — the 1700s. After two films that defined a generation of Malayalam comedy, the stakes have never been higher, and Aadu 3 largely rises to the occasion with spectacle, heart, and Jayasurya at his very best.

Aadu 3 is a bold, visually spectacular chapter that takes the beloved franchise into uncharted territory with a time-travel, dual-timeline narrative. While the comedy takes a backseat to grand production design and ambitious storytelling, Jayasurya’s magnetic dual performance and a richly crafted 1700s world make this an entertaining and exciting ride.

Language: Malayalam
Age Rating: U/A
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy
Director: Midhun Manuel Thomas

The Plot: Shaji Pappan Across Time

At its core, Aadu 3 is everything fans love about the franchise — chaos, camaraderie, and Shaji Pappan’s unmistakable energy — but now wrapped in an ambitious time-travel adventure. This time, the gang finds themselves entangled in a high-stakes chase over a precious stone, one that sends the story spiralling across two wildly different timelines.

The main timeline stays true to the familiar Aadu universe, while the second major arc transports us to the 1700s — a bold creative choice that gives the film its grandest visual identity yet. The non-linear structure works well, and the transitions between timelines are handled smoothly. Yes, the narrative functions largely as a setup for what comes next, but it does so with enough intrigue and spectacle to keep audiences invested and eagerly anticipating the conclusion.

Performances: The Gang Delivers Again

Jayasurya as Shaji Pappan / Padmanabha Thamburan

Jayasurya is the beating heart of Aadu 3, and he reminds us why Shaji Pappan is one of the most beloved characters in Malayalam cinema. His dual role — the lovably bumbling Shaji Pappan in the present timeline and the regal Padmanabha Thamburan in the 1700s — is handled with remarkable ease and charm. Watching him shift between these two avatars is one of the film’s greatest pleasures.

Vinayakan, Sunny Wayne & the Ensemble

Vinayakan brings his trademark intensity and charisma to Azam Khan in the historical timeline, adding considerable weight to the period drama sequences. Sunny Wayne is an absolute delight as a British officer, leaning into the role’s comic potential with confident, committed physicality. The entire principal cast brings familiar warmth and energy — their chemistry remains the franchise’s most reliable strength.

Direction and Vision: Midhun Manuel Thomas Goes Big

Midhun Manuel Thomas has always understood the Aadu universe better than anyone else, and with the third installment he pushes his ambitions to a new level. The decision to go non-linear and introduce a full-blown historical timeline is a daring one, and it largely pays off. The two worlds are distinct yet connected, and the director manages the tonal balance between the two with a steady hand.

The pre-climax revelation of the time-travel concept is genuinely exciting and sets up future installments with considerable promise. If the next chapter delivers on what Aadu 3 has laid the groundwork for, this franchise could reach its most spectacular heights yet.

Technical Craft: Where Aadu 3 Truly Shines

Production Design & Costumes

The 1700s timeline is a jaw-dropping achievement in art direction. The sets are elaborate, the costumes are stunning, and the world-building is immersive. It is clear that enormous effort and craft has gone into creating this historical world, and it shows on screen in every frame.

Music & Background Score

Shaan Rahman’s songs are breezy, well-placed, and add warmth to the film’s lighter moments. Dawn Vincent’s background score is dynamic and effective, keeping the energy alive even during the story’s more measured passages. Together, they form a strong sonic identity for this chapter.

Editing & Cinematography

The inter-timeline editing is one of the technical high points — the transitions feel seamless rather than jarring, a considerable achievement given the structural complexity. The visual treatment of the two timelines is distinct enough to immediately orient the audience without the need for hand-holding.

Strengths & Weaknesses

What Works Brilliantly

  • Jayasurya’s dual performance — Effortless, charming, and deeply entertaining
  • Spectacular 1700s production design — The finest visual achievement in the franchise
  • Smooth inter-timeline editing — Complex narrative handled with clarity
  • Shaan Rahman & Dawn Vincent’s music — Adds texture and energy throughout
  • Strong ensemble camaraderie — The gang’s chemistry remains the franchise’s backbone
  • An exciting time-travel setup — Builds thrilling anticipation for the next chapter

Where It Could Grow

  • The organic, spontaneous comedy of the earlier films is less prominent here
  • The film functions more as a buildup chapter than a fully self-contained story
  • The time-travel element arrives late and could have been woven in earlier

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Aadu 3 is a confident, visually grand chapter that demonstrates the franchise’s willingness to evolve and take risks. It may trade some of the anarchic comedy that made the first two films cult classics for something bigger and more cinematic — but what it offers in return is a richly crafted world, a superb dual performance from Jayasurya, and a genuinely exciting narrative foundation for what comes next.

Midhun Manuel Thomas has built something ambitious here — a film that functions as both a love letter to the Aadu universe and a launchpad for its most spectacular adventure yet. For fans of the franchise, Aadu 3 is an essential, rewarding watch. Shaji Pappan’s greatest chapter may still be ahead of us, but the journey getting there is an entertaining one.
