Akhanda 2 Review 2025: A Powerful Yet Polarising Mass Spectacle

Akhanda 2: Thaandavam continues director Boyapati Sreenu’s larger-than-life cinematic universe with Nandamuri Balakrishna once again at its spiritual and explosive center. Designed unapologetically as a mass entertainer, the film blends action, ideology, and mythology into a loud but committed sequel.

Quick Summary
Akhanda 2 is a high-voltage sequel that thrives on belief, symbolism, and star presence. It works best for viewers who enjoy grand speeches, stylised action, and mythological undertones in mainstream cinema.

  • Language: Telugu
  • Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller
  • Age Rating: UA (13+) – intense action and thematic elements

Plot

Set years after the events of Akhanda, the sequel shifts its focus to a national-level crisis. Murali Krishna, now living a restrained life shaped by loss, finds his world shaken when his niece Janani — a gifted scientist working with India’s defence establishment — becomes central to a bio-security threat targeting the country.

As political conspiracies, foreign enemies, and internal betrayal converge, the return of Akhanda Rudra Sikandar Aghora becomes inevitable. What unfolds is a battle that is both personal and ideological, where faith, duty, and nationhood intersect. The film moves in a linear fashion, relying on heroic interventions and moral declarations rather than mystery or twists.

Key Characters & Performances

Nandamuri Balakrishna delivers a commanding dual performance. As Murali Krishna, he brings emotional gravity, while as Akhanda Aghora, he fully embraces the film’s mythic and spiritual tone. His screen presence remains the backbone of the film.

Harshaali Malhotra shines as Janani, lending sincerity and emotional warmth to the narrative’s core.
Samyuktha Menon adds modern energy and confidence as a free-spirited scientist, complementing the film’s contemporary subplot.
The supporting cast commits fully to the heightened tone, while the antagonists function more as symbolic threats than layered characters — fitting the film’s ideological framing.

Direction & Screenplay

Boyapati Sreenu stays firmly within his signature style — grand set pieces, extended slow-motion sequences, and philosophical monologues. Subtlety is deliberately sacrificed for scale and symbolism. While the narrative can feel repetitive, the director’s conviction ensures tonal consistency throughout.

Music, Action & Technical Craft

Thaman S’s background score is relentless and thunderous, designed to elevate every heroic moment. Action sequences are stylised rather than realistic, prioritising visual impact over physical logic. The cinematography amplifies Balakrishna’s towering persona, presenting him as both warrior and spiritual force.

Themes & Messaging

Akhanda 2 leans heavily into themes of dharma, faith, national identity, and moral awakening. The film frames its hero as an idea rather than just a man — a force that appears when balance is threatened. While the messaging is overt, it aligns with the film’s mass-driven intentions.

Strengths

  • Dominant, conviction-filled performance by Balakrishna
  • High-energy action supported by a powerful score
  • Clear emotional stakes tied to family and duty
  • Fearless commitment to mass-cinema storytelling

Shortcomings

  • Overuse of slow motion and sermons
  • Predictable, linear narrative
  • Limited depth in antagonists

Final Verdict

Akhanda 2: Thaandavam may divide audiences, but it never lacks confidence. It is loud, ideological, and driven entirely by star power. For fans of Balakrishna and unapologetic mass cinema, it delivers exactly what it promises.
