Aloo Paratha Recipe

Aloo Paratha is a classic North Indian dish that’s comforting, flavorful, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Made with a spiced potato filling and whole wheat dough, it’s easy to make and incredibly delicious.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • Water as needed
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp oil

For the filling:

  • 3 medium-sized potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 1 green chili (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves (chopped)
  • Salt to taste

For cooking:

  • Ghee or oil

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, salt, and oil.
  2. Gradually add water and knead into a soft, smooth dough.
  3. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20–30 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Filling

  1. In a bowl, mix mashed potatoes with green chili, ginger, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, garam masala, coriander leaves, and salt.
  2. Ensure the filling is well-blended and lump-free for easy rolling.

Step 3: Assemble the Parathas

  1. Divide the dough and filling into equal portions (about 6–8).
  2. Roll out one dough ball into a small disc. Place a portion of the potato filling in the center.
  3. Gather the edges of the dough and seal the filling inside.
  4. Flatten gently and roll out into a paratha, ensuring the filling doesn’t spill out.

Step 4: Cook the Parathas

  1. Heat a tawa or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Place the rolled paratha on the hot tawa. Cook for 1–2 minutes until bubbles form.
  3. Flip the paratha and apply ghee or oil. Cook both sides until golden brown spots appear.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Serve hot with curd, pickle, or a dollop of butter.

Tips for the Perfect Aloo Paratha

  • Make sure the filling is dry and not too wet to avoid tearing while rolling.
  • Use enough flour for dusting while rolling the paratha.
  • Adjust spices in the filling as per your taste.

Aloo Paratha is best enjoyed fresh off the griddle, paired with a steaming cup of chai or a chilled glass of lassi. It’s hearty, satisfying, and packed with flavor!
