Babita Singh Reporting is one of 2026’s most emotionally resonant dramas, blending a gripping murder mystery with a deeply moving portrait of a woman reclaiming her voice. Starring Nimisha Sajayan in a career-defining role alongside Anshumaan Pushkar and Barun Sobti, the film takes audiences to the heart of Bhopal and Rewa, weaving together crime, family, and self-discovery into a story that stays with you long after the credits roll. Here’s our complete review of this standout release.

Babita Singh Reporting tells the story of Babita “Baby” Singh, an underestimated Sub-Inspector who finds herself suspended from duty just as she travels to her in-laws’ home in Rewa for the first time, only to be pulled into investigating the mysterious death of her childhood friend Bansi. What unfolds is far more than a police procedural: it is a heartfelt, beautifully performed exploration of a woman fighting to be seen, valued, and heard, both inside her marriage and within a system that constantly underestimates her. Anchored by a stunning performance from Nimisha Sajayan and supported by a uniformly excellent cast, director Ambiecka Pandit crafts an atmospheric, emotionally rich drama set against the evocative backdrops of Bhopal and Rewa. With its sensitive writing, immersive setting, and powerhouse performances, Babita Singh Reporting emerges as one of the year’s most rewarding watches.

Plot Summary

Babita Singh, fondly (and dismissively) called “Baby” by her colleagues, is a Sub-Inspector who joined the police force in place of her late father, only to find herself sidelined and confined to paperwork. Desperate to win her senior Inspector Sethi’s approval and secure leave to visit her in-laws in Rewa for the first time, she agrees to record a flattering social media video of him, a gesture that backfires and results in her suspension. Undeterred, she travels to Rewa anyway, where she reconnects with her childhood friend Bansi. That very night, Bansi is found dead under mysterious circumstances. What begins as a personal loss quickly turns into a secret investigation, as Baby defies her dismissive in-laws, an emotionally distant husband, and an indifferent local police force to uncover the truth, all while confronting the quiet, everyday battles of being underestimated at home and at work.

Actor Performances

Nimisha Sajayan as Babita “Baby” Singh

Nimisha Sajayan delivers an extraordinary, deeply felt performance as Baby, capturing every ounce of the character’s quiet vulnerability and gradual awakening. Building on the emotional intensity she brought to The Great Indian Kitchen, Sajayan makes Baby’s journey from self-doubt to self-assurance feel completely genuine and profoundly moving. It’s a performance that anchors the entire film with remarkable grace.

Anshumaan Pushkar as Sharad

Anshumaan Pushkar brings impressive nuance and restraint to the role of Sharad, Baby’s husband. Rather than playing him as an obvious antagonist, Pushkar crafts a portrait of quiet, conditioned control that feels unsettlingly real, adding tremendous depth and complexity to the film’s domestic drama.

Barun Sobti as Bansi

Despite limited screen time, Barun Sobti leaves a lasting impression as Bansi. He brings warmth and authenticity to the role, ensuring that his character’s fate carries genuine emotional weight throughout the film.

Rajesh Kumar as Inspector Sethi

Rajesh Kumar is thoroughly convincing as Inspector Sethi, lending credibility and texture to the film’s police-world dynamics with a performance that feels lived-in and authentic.

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan adds further richness to the procedural world of the film, rounding out the ensemble with a performance that strengthens the story’s institutional backdrop.

Sunita Rajwar as the Mother-in-Law

Sunita Rajwar is wonderfully convincing as Baby’s mother-in-law, bringing sharpness and presence to a role that adds another layer of tension to Baby’s home life.

Technical Craft

Direction

Director Ambiecka Pandit, known for her work on Black Warrant, brings a grounded, atmospheric sensibility to Babita Singh Reporting. She resists the urge to turn Baby into an overnight action hero, instead patiently building her confidence through small, believable moments, resulting in a thoughtful and restrained directorial vision.

Cinematography

Sunil Borkar’s camerawork beautifully captures the evocative settings of Bhopal and Rewa, giving the film a strong, immersive sense of place that complements its sombre, contemplative mood.

Music

Ajay Jayanthi’s music suits the small-town atmosphere of the film effectively, while Anvitaa Dutt’s lyrics add a lovely poetic touch to the soundtrack.

Editing

Tanya Chhabria’s editing keeps the narrative fairly sharp, helping the film maintain its atmospheric tone even through its more deliberately paced stretches.
