Genre: Crime, Thriller
Director: Swarnayu Maitra
Cast: Priyanka Sarkar, Tathagata Mukherjee, Umakant Patil, Sandip Bhattacharya, Chhanda Karenji Chatterjee
Duration: 1 hour 47 minutes
Rating: 3.5/5
Age Rating: U/A (16+)

Set in the quiet town of Balurghat, Bhamini follows a women’s Gomira dance troupe that finds itself at the heart of a deadly conspiracy involving illegal HPV clinical trials. At the center is Suhita, a courageous woman determined to uncover the truth behind a shadowy figure named Hironnokasyap, with help from investigating officer Indra Ahuja.

Performances

Priyanka Sarkar anchors the film with a powerful performance, portraying Suhita’s strength and vulnerability with equal conviction. Tathagata Mukherjee and Umakant Patil deliver solid support, adding weight to key moments in the narrative.

Direction and Technical Aspects

Swarnayu Maitra crafts a tightly wound thriller that effectively blends folklore, social commentary, and suspense. The cinematography and editing enhance the storytelling, keeping the tension alive throughout.

Music

Megh Bannerjee’s background score complements the tone well, adding mood and depth to the emotional and suspenseful arcs.

What Worked:

  • Strong central performance by Priyanka Sarkar.
  • Unique integration of traditional Gomira dance with a modern thriller narrative.
  • Gripping direction and effective use of visuals and score.

What Could Be Improved:

  • Some plot elements may feel overly complex or abstract to casual viewers.
  • A few supporting characters lack development, which limits emotional impact in key scenes.

Final Verdict

Bhamini is a bold and engaging film that brings together tradition and topical relevance with surprising finesse. While it may not appeal to all due to its layered plot and symbolic storytelling, it rewards patient viewers with a compelling cinematic experience grounded in cultural identity and contemporary issues.
