From Corporate Marketing to Filmmaking

Poonam Kaul’s illustrious career in corporate marketing was one filled with challenges and triumphs. However, a creative calling led her to pursue filmmaking, a field where she could tell stories that inspire change. Poonam recounts how her partnership with Michelin-starred chef Vikas Khanna became a catalyst for her transition. Inspired by the narrative potential of Vikas’s book, “The Last Color,” Poonam was driven to adapt it into a film.

The Birth of House of Omkar

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Poonam and Vikas decided to take control of the creative process by founding House of Omkar. Named after Poonam’s father, this production house aimed not just to create films but to address social issues through compelling storytelling. “We are at that cusp in the country today where films can help drive change,” Poonam asserts.

The Last Color: A Tale of Resilience

The Last Color” is a poignant film that brought together talents like Neena Gupta and a nine-year-old girl who had never faced a camera before. The film’s production was marked by several challenges, including limited resources and logistical hurdles. However, the dedication and passion of the team saw them through. “We wanted to show India in its beauty, not just the stereotypes,” Poonam says.

Pinky Ka Basta: A Pandemic-born Project

As the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, Poonam took the opportunity to focus on social issues close to her heart. Her latest film, “Pinky Ka Basta,” examines the educational setbacks faced by girls during the pandemic. “11 million girls across the world have dropped out of school due to the pandemic,” Poonam highlights, emphasizing the dire need for action. The film aims to shed light on these issues and inspire change.

Imaginary Rain: A Story of Hope

Poonam’s upcoming project, “Imaginary Rain,” stars Shabana Azmi and delves into the life of a 65-year-old immigrant chef in New York who faces a turning point when her restaurant shuts down. The film explores themes of resilience and hope, capturing both the struggles and triumphs of its protagonist. “It’s a story of perseverance told through the lens of a 65-year-old woman,” Poonam explains.

The Power of Storytelling

Poonam’s journey from the corporate world to filmmaking is a testament to the power of passion and storytelling. Her films not only entertain but also drive societal change, addressing issues that are often overlooked. As Poonam Kaul continues to break barriers and inspire through her work, her story serves as a powerful reminder that every step taken with purpose and heart can indeed make a difference.
