Daadi Ki Shaadi arrives in cinemas at a time when mainstream Hindi films are chasing spectacle, action, and shock value. Director Ashish R. Mohan brings something quietly refreshing to the table — a warm, emotion-driven family drama set against the scenic hills of Shimla, anchored by the effortless charm of Neetu Kapoor and the crowd-pleasing energy of Kapil Sharma. This is the kind of film that reminds you why you love watching movies with your family on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Imperfect, yes — but undeniably full of heart.

Daadi Ki Shaadi is a feel-good family drama about an elderly mother whose children rush home believing she is secretly getting remarried. What follows is a chaotic, emotional, and often hilarious family reunion packed with warmth, nostalgia, and life lessons. Neetu Kapoor is the soul of the film, Kapil Sharma is reliably entertaining, and the Shimla backdrop adds a soft, beautiful touch. If you enjoy wholesome family entertainers with big emotions and honest performances, this one is well worth your time.

Plot Summary

The story centres on a close-knit yet emotionally distant family. When a social media post sparks rumours that their elderly mother (Neetu Kapoor) is secretly planning to remarry, her children — scattered across cities, busy with careers and personal lives — are thrown into a tizzy and rush back to Shimla. Shocked, puzzled, and mildly scandalised, they descend on her doorstep with their families in tow.

What they do not know is that their mother has deliberately allowed the misunderstanding to continue — because for the first time in years, her children are home. A charming elderly man is roped in to play the “fake boyfriend,” and from there unfolds a delightful chain of confusion, jealousy, emotional confrontations, and ultimately, a deeply touching family reunion. At its heart, the film is a gentle meditation on loneliness, love, and the quiet sacrifices parents make — often unnoticed by the very people they raised.

Performances

Neetu Kapoor is absolutely magnificent in this film. As the grandmother at the centre of all the chaos, she brings mischief, vulnerability, warmth, and dignity to every frame. Her facial expressions do more storytelling than entire scenes of dialogue, and she commands the screen with a grace that only comes from decades of experience. This is one of her finest outings in recent memory.

Kapil Sharma pleasantly surprises here. Known primarily for his comic genius, he steps up in the more emotionally demanding scenes and holds his own convincingly. His natural comic timing keeps the film breezy and fun, while his heartfelt moments add unexpected depth to his character. A well-rounded performance.

R. Sarathkumar brings solid screen presence and adds considerable gravitas to the proceedings. His character strengthens the film’s emotional backbone, and every scene he is part of carries weight and sincerity.

Sadia Khateeb is a genuine delight to watch. She brings freshness, ease, and a quiet charm to her role, making her character feel relatable and real. A promising talent who deserves more screen time.

Riddhima Kapoor Sahni makes her acting debut and handles it with commendable composure. She appears genuinely at ease on camera — a quality that many newcomers struggle with — and leaves a positive impression given the limited scope of her role.

Yograj Singh makes a memorable impact even in a relatively brief appearance, delivering his scenes with conviction and warmth.

Deepakk Dutta and Jitender Hooda, playing the sons, are standout contributors to the film’s humour and contribute significantly to the chaos and charm of the family reunion portions.

Tejaswini Kolhapure makes a welcome return to films and handles her role with the ease of a seasoned performer.

Technical Craft

Visually, Daadi Ki Shaadi is a pleasure. The Shimla setting is used beautifully — the mist-covered hills, lush greenery, and serene landscapes provide a soft, soothing contrast to the family drama unfolding within the household. The cinematography gives the film a warm, inviting look that suits its emotional tone perfectly.

The background score works in harmony with the story, rising and falling appropriately with the film’s emotional beats. The music, while not particularly chart-topping, fits the mood and never feels out of place. The production design reflects the warmth of a lived-in family home, with careful attention to the kind of details that make family films feel authentic and relatable.

The writing, by Ashish R. Mohan, Bunty Rathore, and Sahil S. Sharma, juggles multiple tracks and characters across a fairly long runtime of 2 hours 35 minutes. The film’s pacing is more leisurely than most, which serves the emotional core but may occasionally test the patience of viewers expecting a tighter edit.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Neetu Kapoor delivers one of the most effortlessly captivating performances of the year
  • Kapil Sharma strikes a strong balance between comedy and emotion
  • The Shimla backdrop adds visual warmth and beauty throughout
  • Genuine laugh-out-loud moments in the comedy sequences
  • A heartfelt and relevant theme — loneliness among the elderly — that Hindi cinema rarely addresses with such sincerity
  • Strong ensemble cast with multiple memorable turns
  • Emotionally resonant family moments that feel honest and relatable

Weaknesses

  • The runtime of 2 hours 35 minutes could have been tighter, particularly in the second half
  • Some scenes carry the message a little too insistently, which slightly reduces their emotional impact
  • A few supporting characters, including some talented performers, do not get enough screen time to fully shine

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5)

Daadi Ki Shaadi is a film that wears its heart proudly on its sleeve. It does not pretend to be groundbreaking, and it does not need to be. What it offers instead is something increasingly rare in today’s cinema — a genuine, unfiltered celebration of family, love, and the quiet dignity of growing older. Neetu Kapoor alone is worth the price of admission, and the film around her is filled with enough warmth, humour, and emotion to make for a deeply satisfying theatrical experience. Take your parents, take your family, and let this one remind you what you mean to each other.
