London’s iconic Leicester Square, known for celebrating the magic of cinema, is set to welcome a special tribute to Bollywood’s most beloved romantic film—Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). A bronze statue of superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, immortalizing their iconic pose from the 1995 classic, will soon join the prestigious Scenes in the Square movie trail.

A Historic Moment for Indian Cinema

This marks the first time an Indian film will be honored with a statue in Leicester Square, placing DDLJ alongside legendary Hollywood figures like Gene Kelly, Laurel & Hardy, and Harry Potter. The statue will be unveiled in Spring 2024, ahead of the film’s 30th anniversary on October 20, 2025.

Why Leicester Square?

The location holds deep significance for DDLJ fans. The film, directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra, features key scenes shot in London, including the fateful moment when Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) first cross paths near Leicester Square. The statue will be placed outside the Odeon cinema, recreating the magic of their serendipitous meeting.

A Global Cultural Phenomenon

Since its release, DDLJ has become more than just a film—it’s a cultural legacy. The movie redefined romance in Indian cinema and continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Its impact is now being celebrated with:

  • A new musical adaptation, Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical, premiering in Manchester on May 29.
  • A permanent tribute in London, reinforcing Bollywood’s global influence.

A Tribute to Love, Cinema & Diversity

Mark Williams of the Heart of London Business Alliance expressed excitement about adding “titans of international cinema” to the trail. He highlighted how the statue honors Bollywood’s global appeal and London’s multicultural spirit.

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, shared his pride in this historic recognition, stating that DDLJ’s 30-year journey symbolizes the unifying power of cinema.

A Must-Visit for Fans Worldwide

Once unveiled, the statue is expected to become a pilgrimage spot for Bollywood lovers, drawing fans from across the globe. It’s not just a tribute to Raj and Simran’s love story, but also a celebration of how Indian cinema has touched hearts worldwide.

As we count down to the grand unveiling, one thing is certain—DDLJ’s magic is truly timeless.
