Bollywood’s latest cop thriller Deva, starring Shahid Kapoor, was expected to be a game-changer. But why is it struggling at the box office while its original version, Mumbai Police (2013), was a massive success? Here’s everything you need to know about Deva, its origins, and its fate at the box office.

Deva’s Box Office Struggle: What Went Wrong?

Shahid Kapoor’s Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrews, hit theaters with high expectations. However, despite the star power and intense storyline, the film has underperformed. With an opening collection of only ₹5.5 crores, Deva has made ₹21.9 crores in four days against its ₹50 crore budget—a worrying sign for its success.

So, what went wrong? Did Bollywood fail to do justice to this Malayalam cult classic, or is there another reason behind its slow start?

The Original: Why Was Mumbai Police a Hit?

The 2013 Malayalam film Mumbai Police, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, was a gripping psychological thriller that left audiences stunned. Made on a modest ₹6 crore budget, it became a critical and commercial success.

Plot Overview

Mumbai Police follows ACP Antony Moses, known as “Rascal Moses,” who suffers memory loss after a road accident. Struggling to solve a case he was already working on, the film unravels shocking twists that kept audiences hooked till the end. The Hindi remake has stayed faithful to this premise but has tweaked some elements.

Where to Watch the Original?

Unlike Deva, which is currently playing in theaters, Mumbai Police is easily accessible on Disney+ Hotstar for streaming.

Star Cast of Deva

Apart from Shahid Kapoor, Deva also features:

  • Pooja Hegde
  • Pravessh Rana
  • Pavail Gulati

Despite the promising cast, the film’s reception has been lukewarm compared to its original.

Will Deva Get an OTT Release?

Given its slow box office numbers, Deva might soon land on an OTT platform. Although there is no official confirmation yet, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are likely contenders for its digital release.

Should You Watch Deva or Mumbai Police?

If you love thrillers with mind-bending twists, both movies are worth watching. However, if you prefer the raw intensity of a gripping narrative, then Mumbai Police remains the better option.

Which version do you prefer? Let us know in the comments!
