Inspector Zende Movie Review

The crowded streets of Mumbai. The quiet tension of a police officer waiting in disguise. The chilling calm of a criminal who thought he could never be caught. Netflix’s Inspector Zende grips you with its raw authenticity — leaving audiences wondering: is this gripping cat-and-mouse chase actually rooted in real events?

Bollywood and streaming dramas have often drawn from reality to create stories that feel larger than life. Think of Scam 1992, where Harshad Mehta’s financial empire kept us glued to the screen, or Delhi Crime, which made us relive a tragedy that shook the nation. Inspector Zende walks that same line — blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction.

But here’s the twist — unlike many dramatizations, this one is inspired by a real man and real events that made history.

The Real Shadows Behind the Reel Story

Real Life Madhukar Bapurao Zende

The Netflix drama is inspired by the life of Madhukar Bapurao Zende, one of Mumbai’s most respected police officers. Serving from 1959 to 1996, Zende built his reputation not through violence or flashy encounters, but through sharp intelligence, patience, and courage.

And at the center of his legacy? The relentless pursuit of one of the world’s most notorious criminals — Charles Sobhraj, the “Bikini Killer” also known as “The Serpent.”

In 1971, Zende first arrested Sobhraj in Mumbai after carefully tracking him at the Taj Hotel. Though Sobhraj managed to escape later, the case set the stage for a bigger showdown.

Years later, in 1986, after Sobhraj had escaped from Tihar Jail, Zende once again tracked him down. This time in Goa, outside the iconic O’Coqueiro restaurant, Zende calmly walked up to him and said the now-legendary words:
“Hello, Charles. How are you?”

It wasn’t a cinematic line — it really happened. And with that, Zende captured the elusive killer for the second time.

What Makes the Film Feel So Real?

Director’s choice of detail gives Inspector Zende its unnerving authenticity. The Goa restaurant, the tense undercover work, the methodical police planning — all mirror real-life incidents documented in police records and media reports from the 1970s and 1980s.

Even Jim Sarbh’s portrayal of the killer — renamed Carl Bhojraj in the film — carries the chilling charm and menace that witnesses described when speaking about Charles Sobhraj. Manoj Bajpayee’s restrained performance as Zende captures not just the thrill of the chase, but also the quiet dignity of a cop who believed in presence over force.

Is Inspector Zende the Next Delhi Crime?

Just like Delhi Crime made audiences feel the weight of real investigations, Inspector Zende blurs the line between reel and real.

Zende’s calm courage echoes real-life officers who preferred patience over violence. His encounters with Mumbai’s criminal underworld — from gangsters like Haji Mastan to tense riot-control moments — remind us of how fragile law and order can be, and how much it relies on the character of individuals.

The story doesn’t just highlight one arrest. It showcases a philosophy of policing:
“I never fired a bullet in my entire career. Policing is about presence, not force.”

So, Is It Based on a True Story?

The truth? Yes — Netflix’s Inspector Zende is directly inspired by real events. It dramatizes the legendary career of Madhukar Zende, particularly his two captures of Charles Sobhraj, the “Bikini Killer.”

But more than just a retelling, the film is a tribute — a reminder of what ethical policing and quiet bravery can achieve.

Zende’s legacy isn’t just about one criminal. It’s about showing that justice can be served without guns, without theatrics, and without shortcuts.

And that’s exactly what makes Inspector Zende feel so powerful, so real, and so unforgettable.
