The police in Kolkata, West Bengal, apprehended 11 individuals following disturbances at a student and youth rally. None of those arrested were students, with two suspects planning to flee to another state. Among the detainees is Mohammad Afroz from Rajabagan, Metiabruz, identified through video footage. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had warned of stringent action against those instigating the unrest, leading to the arrests within 24 hours.
Mohammad Azad from Garden Reach and Arshad Ali from Amherst Street are among those arrested in Andal, West Burdwan. The Chief Minister highlighted five individuals, including Mohammad Afroz, as troublemakers in the incident. Seventy non-students involved in the rally have been identified, with no links to the NEET movement or the ‘Cockroach Janta Party.’ The procession, held against educational corruption and NEET question leaks, allegedly turned violent with attacks on police and journalists.
Seven cases have been registered, with the Anti-Goon Act invoked against the accused. The state government has applied this law for the first time, emphasizing police restraint during the incident. The Chief Minister praised the police for not succumbing to provocation despite attacks on journalists, resulting in injuries to six media personnel.
