A fire at an elderly care facility in Sri Lanka’s Western Province has claimed the lives of 12 individuals. The incident occurred in Anguruwatota, Horana, with 44 people safely evacuated and seven others injured and hospitalized. Three individuals remain unaccounted for, while the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Local reports indicate that the Director of the facility has been remanded until June 11 by the Horana Magistrate’s Court. Six individuals with severe injuries are receiving treatment at the Horana Base Hospital, while around 50 survivors were temporarily housed at Batagoda Junior School.

Following the tragedy, 71 residents were relocated to another branch of the same elderly care organization with the help of the Sri Lanka Army. The facility, known as ‘Senehase Kedella’, is popular on social media for showcasing the residents’ daily activities, including birthday celebrations and interactions with staff.
