In a thrilling match against Myanmar, 14-year-old Joya scored a crucial goal in stoppage time, leading India to a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory. Joya, playing in only her second international appearance for the Indian U17 women’s national team, celebrated her winning goal by calling her supportive mother immediately after the match. Hailing from Phagwara, Punjab, Joya’s football journey started in her village where she was inspired by watching boys play in the neighborhood.
Competing in the U15 Khelo India Women’s Football League in 2024 provided Joya with her first taste of competitive football at a higher level. Her standout performances in the league earned her a spot in the national camp in Bengaluru earlier this year, where she trained under head coach Pamela Conti alongside some of India’s top young talents. The experience of training with seasoned players and a coach with World Cup experience broadened Joya’s understanding of international football dynamics.
Joya’s dedication and hard work culminated in a memorable moment in Yangon when she was subbed in late in the game and scored the winning goal following the coaching staff’s instructions. This significant victory not only showcased Joya’s talent but also highlighted the support she received from her coaches and family throughout her football journey.
