The 16th BRICS Meeting of High Representatives for National Security in New Delhi highlighted the importance of stronger regional and multilateral cooperation to address various challenges. The meeting, as reported by South African media outlet ‘The Citizen,’ emphasized the need for collective responses to issues like terrorism, infectious diseases, energy insecurity, cybercrime, and climate-related disasters. India and South Africa called for enhanced collaboration among member states to tackle these shared challenges effectively.

India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, speaking at the meeting, expressed concerns about the increasingly volatile global security environment. He noted that factors such as military conflicts, economic pressures, geopolitical uncertainties, and evolving technologies were posing threats to the stability of BRICS member states. NSA Doval specifically mentioned the impact of disruptive technologies and cyberattacks that transcend national borders, rendering conventional defense mechanisms insufficient in the face of modern security threats.

During the meeting, it was highlighted that national security paradigms have evolved beyond traditional definitions focused on armed aggression. In today’s era of globalization and rapid technological advancements, countries are confronted with a broader spectrum of non-traditional security risks. These include cyber threats, pandemics, terrorism, and the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The interconnected and transnational nature of these emerging challenges presents complexities in containment and necessitates collaborative efforts on a global scale.

Delegates at the meeting also underscored the significance of safeguarding critical infrastructure, ensuring maritime security, and securing international energy routes. Given the disruptions in global energy supplies due to tensions in the Middle East, protecting key energy pathways emerged as a strategic priority. Furthermore, the meeting identified AI-driven disinformation campaigns as a growing threat, emphasizing the potential for enhanced BRICS cooperation to counter such challenges effectively.
