At least 20 individuals lost their lives, and over 80 sustained injuries in Parun city, Nuristan province, Afghanistan, due to severe flooding. Reports from Taliban authorities indicated that more than 100 individuals are still unaccounted for following the floods in Parun and nearby areas. The National Disaster Management Authority, under Taliban control, stated that the floods severely affected Parun and other regions of Nuristan, resulting in significant casualties and destruction.

Specialized teams have been deployed by the National Disaster Management Authority to assess the situation, locate missing persons, and evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the floods. The calamity led to the destruction of residential homes, agricultural lands, and shops, resulting in substantial financial losses. The casualty count is expected to fluctuate as search and rescue efforts persist in the flood-affected zones.

Authorities are concerned that the death toll may escalate as over 100 individuals are still missing, prompting ongoing search operations for survivors and individuals potentially swept away by the floods. The floods were triggered by heavy rainfall in parts of Nuristan, where the mountainous terrain and limited road access pose challenges to rescue operations. Afghanistan is particularly susceptible to extreme weather events, including landslides, droughts, and floods.

In a separate incident in May, six individuals were killed, and 11 others were injured in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, Herat, Ghor, and Takhar provinces due to strong winds and thunderstorms. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority reported extensive destruction of roads, wells, agricultural lands, trees, and numerous solar panels caused by the severe weather conditions. Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, a spokesperson for ANDMA, confirmed the fatalities and damages, noting the destruction of 20 houses and partial damage to 10 others.
