In a significant development for peace in Manipur, 46 active members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) surrendered to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, handing over a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition. This surrender, which took place at the Mantripukhri Garrison in Imphal East district, included the laying down of 28 sophisticated weapons like rifles, pistols, and machine guns. The cadres, who were not part of any previous peace agreements, chose to transition to civilian life voluntarily.

The surrender marks a major breakthrough in security efforts in Manipur, signaling a shift towards stability and development in the region. The surrendered cadres, associated with the KCP-PWG extremist group, handed over a variety of weapons, ammunition, and explosives. This move is seen as a crucial step in addressing the historical legacy of the KCP, which was founded in 1980 and has since splintered into various factions.

Lt Col Amit Shukla, a defense spokesman, highlighted the significance of this mass surrender, emphasizing that it represents a substantial operational setback for the PWG faction. While it may not signify the complete dissolution of the group, the surrender is expected to severely impact the anti-social networks and territorial influence of the faction. The successful surrender was the result of concerted efforts by security forces, police, and government agencies, supported by a civilian-centric approach.
