At least 51 people lost their lives, and 39 others were injured in floods and landslides in Bangladesh, as per the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. Over a million individuals have been impacted by the floods, with nearly 268,000 families stranded. The flood-affected regions include Rangamati, Bandarban, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Khagrachhari, Cox’s Bazar, and Chattogram.
As reported by The Business Standard, Cox’s Bazar recorded the highest casualties at 28, followed by Chattogram with 13 deaths. Additionally, Bandarban reported six fatalities, Rangamati three, and Moulvibazar one. The affected areas encompass 58 upazilas, 386 unions, and 12 municipalities, with 1,131 shelters opened for those impacted.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, has directed all relevant agencies and field-level administration to be on high alert. He emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to safeguard lives and property affected by waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. Rahman stressed the need for swift relief distribution and healthcare services during a virtual meeting with various officials.
During the meeting, officials briefed Rahman on the situation in their respective areas, detailing the damage, rescue operations, and relief efforts. The Prime Minister underscored the administration’s duty to prioritize the safety of citizens and their belongings. He urged officials to expedite the distribution of essential relief items and healthcare services to those affected.
