Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has emphasized the importance of vice-captain KL Rahul taking on a leadership role in India’s Test batting lineup. Chopra highlighted that Rahul’s experience and consistency will be crucial for India’s success during the team’s transition phase as they prepare to face Afghanistan in a one-off Test match at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on June 6.
According to Chopra, KL Rahul is now at the peak phase of his Test career and needs to step up as one of the team’s senior players. He praised Rahul’s performance in overseas conditions and his significant contributions as one of India’s top openers in Test cricket.
Aakash Chopra commended the decision to appoint KL Rahul as the vice-captain under Test skipper Shubman Gill, indicating the team’s confidence in Rahul’s ability to handle added responsibilities. With the recent retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Chopra stressed the importance of Rahul solidifying his position at the top of the batting order.
Rahul’s challenge, as per Chopra, lies in maintaining his high standards of performance consistently over a prolonged period. Despite his proven track record as a prolific run-scorer, Rahul’s role becomes even more critical in guiding and setting an example for the younger players in the team, especially in the less crowded opening slot of Test cricket.
As India gears up to face Afghanistan in their post-IPL Test season, KL Rahul is expected to partner with the team captain at the top of the order, marking a new phase for the Indian team in red-ball cricket.
