Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra), Aug 2 (IANS) Abhijeet Dipke-led online movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is set to take a crucial decision on whether to take a political plunge or not at its core committee meeting here on August 5, sources said on Sunday.

Gen Z icon Dipke is set to host members of the movement at his home for chalking out the future strategy, based on the feedback collected from supporters in various states, said a functionary.

The CJP functionary said the “successful” protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over NEET paper leak and the resultant resignation of the then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has raised expectations from the Dipke-led outfit.

Sources said after the core committee’s meeting on August 5, Dipke will address a press conference to share the outcomes of the deliberations.

The agenda for the meeting has been clearly outlined as – decision regarding the future course of action of the CJP, said a functionary.

In his media interaction after the culmination of the Delhi protest, Dipke had dropped hints of his resolve to keep alive the CJP movement as a “response group” to raise issues related to students and youth.

Reiterating his belief in peaceful and democratic practices, Dipke has over the past few days clarified that the CJP would neither let any political party use it as a front to target the government nor itself join a political outfit.

Observers believe the new challenge before Dipke or CJP is to sustain movements based on legitimate grievances of students and continue to steer change in the education sector.

Amid allegations of a role of external actors in amplifying CJP’s movement, observers believe such forces cannot create public discontent where none exists, but they can, in some circumstances, amplify existing grievances and accelerate mobilisation.

The scale and speed of the recent mobilisation, the CJP’s extensive social media outreach, the participation of large numbers of young people and the movement’s sustained momentum have prompted questions in several quarters about whether it represents something larger than a domestic protest.

While the grievances that drove the recent anti-paper leak agitation merit serious attention, the manner in which the movement expanded reflects a pattern that has become increasingly visible in protest movements across the world over the past two decades, said an analyst.
