Former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund expressed his belief that Punjab Kings missed a strategic opportunity by not utilizing Yuzvendra Chahal during the middle overs in their recent IPL match against Delhi Capitals. Despite setting a target of 210 runs, Punjab Kings faced defeat as Delhi Capitals achieved the highest successful chase in Dharamsala IPL history, winning by three wickets with six balls to spare. A key point of discussion was Punjab’s failure to deploy Yuzvendra Chahal, a seasoned leg-spinner, throughout the match, especially when Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs were stabilizing the innings.
Mukund, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out Show, highlighted that Chahal should have been introduced between overs 7 to 15, particularly when facing challenging conditions with players like Miller and Axar on the crease. He emphasized that even if Chahal proved costly initially, Punjab had a comfortable lead on the scoreboard to take such risks in pursuit of breakthroughs. The cricketer suggested that at least an over of Chahal should have been bowled to assess the situation, especially considering the scoreboard pressure and the opportunity to trade runs for wickets.
According to Mukund, the optimal period to experiment with spin bowling was between overs seven and ten, before Delhi Capitals’ experienced players took control of the chase. He mentioned that this strategic move could have been backed up by Stoinis as a backup plan if needed. Despite Punjab Kings’ early success in reducing Delhi Capitals to 38/3, they couldn’t contain the partnership between Axar Patel and David Miller, with debutant Madhav Tiwari’s quick cameo ultimately sealing the victory for Delhi.
