Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stated on Monday night that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making extensive efforts to create a political system in the state without any opposition. Abhishek was questioned at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Salt Lake office in Kolkata for over 11 hours on Monday. Upon leaving the ED office, he addressed the media and implied that the actions taken against him by state and central investigating agencies were part of the BJP’s vindictive politics, aiming to establish a one-party rule in West Bengal.
Abhishek criticized the BJP, accusing them of attempting to weaken the opposition by poaching members and using tactics to suppress and intimidate those who oppose without yielding. He expressed concerns that the BJP, after manipulating the voters’ list and election results, is now scheming to deprive the opposition of its rightful role. Abhishek emphasized that despite the challenges, the opposition will not give in and will continue to resist the BJP’s efforts to eliminate dissent in West Bengal.
He further alleged that the BJP has targeted elected representatives of the party and warned that their strategies will not succeed in silencing the opposition. Abhishek is scheduled to appear at the CID headquarters in South Kolkata on June 16 for questioning regarding an FIR filed against him, where he is accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the state Assembly polls. The CID officials issued a notice to him on June 12 for the upcoming interrogation.
