Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, has moved to a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court to contest a notice from the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for the collection of his voice samples on June 30. The CID’s directive follows a district court order in North 24 Parganas district earlier this week related to an ongoing probe where Banerjee is accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Justice Kaushik Chanda, on a single-judge bench, has accepted Banerjee’s petition, with the first hearing scheduled for June 28. The CID, based on pre-election rally video evidence, sought permission from the Bidhannagar Court to gather Banerjee’s voice samples, which was granted on June 23, setting June 30 for the collection.
In a separate case, Banerjee is also facing CID scrutiny over alleged discrepancies in Trinamool legislators’ signatures on a resolution concerning opposition bench appointments in the Assembly. He has been interrogated twice in this matter. Recently, the Calcutta High Court rejected Banerjee’s request for an expedited hearing on his plea to travel abroad for eye treatment.
