Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee underwent six and a half hours of interrogation at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in South Kolkata. He faced questioning over alleged inflammatory remarks and threats made to Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the Assembly elections. Banerjee arrived just before the scheduled time of 12 noon and was immediately questioned by CID investigators.
Exiting the CID office a little after 6.30 p.m., Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, declined to respond to media inquiries. It remains uncertain whether he will be summoned again in connection with the matter. An FIR was lodged against Banerjee last month at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, leading to the CID taking over the investigation on June 11.
This marks the third consecutive day that Banerjee has been interrogated by investigating agencies. Previously, he faced questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for over 11 hours regarding a cash-for-school-job case in West Bengal. Additionally, he was questioned by CID officials for 8.5 hours in relation to the signature-mismatch case involving Trinamool legislators. The CID probe focuses on allegations of forgery related to the nomination of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition based on discrepancies in submitted documents.
