Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday. Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress general secretary, affirmed that their fight against the BJP would persist despite the BJP’s victory in the allegedly rigged West Bengal Assembly elections. Banerjee highlighted concerns over the disenfranchisement of nearly 30 lakh genuine voters and criticized the Election Commission of India for what he perceived as biased conduct.
Banerjee expressed worry about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process in West Bengal, citing incidents during the election. He demanded the release of CCTV footage from counting centers and a transparent counting of VVPAT slips to address doubts and uphold the people’s mandate. Emphasizing the importance of trust in electoral institutions for democracy, Banerjee raised issues of post-poll violence, attacks on party offices, and intimidation of party workers, calling them unacceptable in a democratic society.
Stressing the need for safety and political beliefs to coexist, Banerjee condemned the targeted attacks on Trinamool workers and supporters. He assured continued support for the people of West Bengal and vowed to uphold democracy, constitutional values, and the rights of the citizens under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Banerjee reiterated the party’s commitment to fighting for democracy without fear or compromise.
