Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has not yet provided documents in a recent traffic violation case, as per police sources. Banerjee faced allegations of breaching the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, leading to a notice from Kalighat police requesting specific documents.
The deadline for submitting the documents to the police station was Saturday, but sources reveal that they remain outstanding. Consequently, there is a possibility of another notice being issued to Banerjee to furnish the required paperwork. An FIR was lodged against Banerjee at Kalighat police station in south Kolkata on Wednesday following a complaint by a Baguiati resident, Rajiv Sarkar.
The complaint accused Banerjee’s security guards of reckless driving, contravening sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Allegations include violations such as traveling in a moving vehicle while hanging, which is prohibited under Section 123 of the Motor Vehicle Act, and dangerous driving, a punishable offense under Section 184.
A case has been filed against Banerjee under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and BNS, including Sections 281, 125, 223, and 3(5). Notably, Banerjee is already facing corruption charges and has been under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for some time. Recent developments, including the withdrawal of his protection in a defamation case by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, have added to his challenges.
