Activist Sonam Wangchuk is currently undergoing medical treatment at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition, with his vital parameters reported as stable. However, concerns persist regarding his blood sugar levels, electrolyte balance, and blood counts.
A multidisciplinary team of experts from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, is overseeing Wangchuk’s treatment. His blood sugar levels are noted to be low, and his serum potassium level was recorded at 3.2 mEq/L in a recent sample. Additionally, Wangchuk is experiencing persistent pancytopenia, characterized by low red and white blood cell counts.
Despite receiving oral rehydration therapy and potassium supplementation, Wangchuk has been declining intravenous fluids and glucose administration against medical advice. The hospital emphasized the need for sustained medical supervision due to his mild to moderate dehydration, ongoing laboratory abnormalities, and the physical strain of prolonged fasting.
Continuous observation is deemed crucial to monitor Wangchuk’s recovery and address any potential complications arising from his extended fast and current health status. The medical team is providing necessary care while closely assessing his clinical condition. Treatment decisions will be guided by his progress and ongoing laboratory findings.
Wangchuk, who was taken from Jantar Mantar to the hospital by Delhi Police, has vowed to continue his 23-day fast until student leaders are allowed to meet Parliamentarians or until he can meet them in the hospital.
