Ending the long-standing Dravidian rule in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has surprised many by leading in 108 constituencies in the 2026 Assembly elections. Despite this success, TVK is 10 seats shy of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.
Vijay’s victory in two constituencies poses a challenge as one seat will need to be vacated. Additionally, appointing an MLA as Speaker further reduces TVK’s voting strength, necessitating support from at least 12 more legislators to secure a comfortable majority.
The election results indicate a fragmented mandate, with smaller parties like the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Indian Union Muslim League, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi playing potential key roles. While the AIADMK-led front has modest numbers, alliances with parties like the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Bharatiya Janata Party could aid TVK in reaching the majority threshold.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arelekar is expected to oversee the government formation process, potentially inviting Vijay to prove his majority or explore other options if support is lacking. Failure to secure a majority could lead to the consideration of President’s Rule and subsequent fresh elections.
