Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Ltd (AEMIL), a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL), has completed a 1,000 megawatt high-voltage direct current transmission link between Kudus and Aarey, enhancing Mumbai’s power infrastructure. This project includes a 30-kilometre overhead line and a 50-kilometre underground corridor, uniquely designed for urban settings. The initiative aims to bolster grid resilience following the 2020 Mumbai blackout, facilitating increased electricity access for Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The transmission link allows Mumbai to tap into external power sources, including renewable energy from other regions, supplementing the city’s existing national grid connection. By enabling more controlled and efficient power flows, especially for renewable energy integration, this project reduces dependence on local power generation within the MMR. With an additional 1,000 MW capacity, the region can enhance grid stability, decrease outage risks, and optimize power distribution.
Utilizing Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology, the project offers improved power flow control, enhanced voltage stability, and heightened grid reliability, crucial for densely populated urban areas like Mumbai. It provides operational advantages such as dynamic voltage support, reduced transmission losses over long distances, and black-start capability for quicker power restoration during outages. The Kudus–Aarey link, a major urban HVDC system globally, is set to elevate external power sourcing for Mumbai, alleviating pressure on local generation and fortifying grid resilience amid rising energy demands in the MMR.
Adani Energy Solutions Ltd CEO Kandarp Patel emphasized the significance of the Aarey–Kudus transmission line in integrating large-scale renewable energy into Mumbai’s power grid efficiently. This advanced HVDC project, powered by VSC-based technology, enhances grid stability, optimizes network capacity, and reinforces the city’s energy security. The completion of this project signifies a substantial stride towards a cleaner, more robust energy future for Mumbai.
