A significant milestone is set to be achieved by Adani Vizhinjam International Seaport as it prepares to receive its 1000th commercial vessel on June 24. The MSC Luciana, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), will mark this achievement by docking at Vizhinjam around 5 pm. This milestone comes less than two years after the port commenced operations, with the first commercial vessel, San Fernando of Maersk, arriving on July 11, 2024.
The port’s rapid progress from its inaugural vessel to the 1000th arrival has garnered attention in global shipping circles. Benefiting from its deep draft, natural harbor, and strategic location near the East-West international shipping route, Vizhinjam has attracted some of the world’s largest container ships. This development is a crucial turning point for Kerala’s maritime aspirations, aiming to establish a transshipment hub closer to the primary shipping route and reduce India’s reliance on foreign transshipment centers like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.
The arrival of the 1000th vessel underscores Vizhinjam’s potential as an efficient hub capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels. With its modern infrastructure and capacity for mega ships, the port is positioning itself as a key player in the regional maritime network. Transitioning from a long-awaited infrastructure project, Vizhinjam is now emerging as a sought-after destination for major global shipping companies, signaling a new era in its operational journey.
