Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler will collaborate in the upcoming movie ‘Last Dance.’ Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Karim Ainouz, the film is a father-daughter narrative, as per ‘Deadline.’ Ben Platt, a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy-winning actor, will co-star and compose original music for the film. Rachel Zegler, fresh from her Olivier-winning role in ‘Evita,’ will perform original music. The screenplay, based on a 2021 autobiographical article ‘The Last Dance with My Dad’ from The New Yorker, is written by Emily Ziff Griffin.
‘Last Dance’ marks Adrien Brody’s first known movie project post his second Best Actor Oscar win for ‘The Brutalist.’ The movie portrays celebrated Broadway composer Elliot (played by Adrien Brody) inviting his daughter Emma (played by Rachel Zegler) on a 1991 Caribbean gay cruise. Amidst music, celebration, and chosen family, Emma, the sole straight woman on board, encounters an unexpected first love with a young crew member. However, the looming AIDS crisis adds a somber undertone to the joy and revelry. As Elliot grapples with his illness, father and daughter must confront their unspoken truths before time runs out.
Director Karim Ainouz expressed excitement about portraying a time of hope and celebration amidst the AIDS crisis, emphasizing the strength and unity within the queer community. He described ‘Last Dance’ as a universal and pressing narrative where joy symbolizes resilience and the dance floor becomes a symbol of resistance. Collaborating with exceptional talent to bring this story to life, Ainouz highlighted the importance of sharing tales of hope in today’s world.
