An Ahmedabad court has placed a 34-year-old alleged illegal arms supplier in police custody for five days. The accused, identified as Mohamad Kalim alias Kalim Bhaiya, was arrested with four country-made pistols and seven live cartridges. The custodial interrogation aims to uncover the source of the weapons believed to have been brought from Madhya Pradesh.
Investigators are focusing on identifying the broader network involved in the arms supply. The accused, a resident of Musamiya Chali in Isanpur area, was apprehended in connection with a case registered at the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) police station. He faces charges under Sections 121(2) and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 25(1-B)(A) of the Arms Act.
The arrest took place on July 3, and the accused will remain in police custody until July 7. The police had deployed teams across Ahmedabad ahead of the annual Rath Yatra on July 16 to maintain law and order. During questioning, the accused allegedly attacked a senior police officer with a knife, resulting in a violent confrontation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Bharat Patel revealed that the accused, with a history of multiple criminal cases, including arms-related offenses, attacked the Joint Commissioner of Police during interrogation. The Joint Commissioner sustained injuries but managed to defend himself by firing a shot in self-defence. Both the accused and the officer received medical treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the firearms and to dismantle the alleged interstate arms supply network. The accused’s previous involvement in procuring and selling firearms is under scrutiny. Authorities suspect his intention to strengthen his influence in the area by arming associates and forming a gang.
