Ahmedabad is gearing up to transform into an “Olympic Ready City” as the Gujarat government has set aside Rs 1,278 crore in the 2026–27 State Budget. This move follows the state’s successful bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Finance Minister Kanu Desai, while presenting the budget in the state Assembly, highlighted a series of investments aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure and urban facilities in preparation for the upcoming international event.
The allocated amount is part of a larger initiative to position Gujarat as a global sports destination and to upgrade Ahmedabad’s infrastructure to meet the international standards required for hosting major multi-sport events. The sports sector has been allotted a total of Rs 1,331 crore in the 2026–27 budget, showcasing the state government’s emphasis on developing top-notch facilities and supporting athletes across various disciplines.
To develop Ahmedabad as an Olympic Ready City and propel the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave project, a provision of Rs 500 crore has been made. Additionally, Rs 165 crore has been earmarked for the infrastructure development of sports complexes in different districts, with an additional Rs 101 crore allocated for creating sports-related infrastructure in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
An amount of Rs 100 crore has been set aside to establish Olympic-level infrastructure at Karai, aimed at bolstering the state’s capacity to host high-performance training and competitive events. Another Rs 100 crore has been designated for constructing a Para High Performance Centre in Gandhinagar, which will offer specialized training and support facilities for para-athletes.
