As the summer heatwave pushes temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in Ahmedabad, the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden at Kankaria, managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, has taken steps to cool and hydrate over 2,000 animals, birds, and reptiles at the facility. To combat the heat stress, the zoo has set up 38 to 40 air coolers near enclosures housing animals like elephants, lions, tigers, and leopards. Additionally, green shade nets have been installed to shield the animals from direct sunlight, while regular water sprinkling helps maintain lower temperatures in the habitats.
A special geo-thermal aeration system has been introduced in the nocturnal zoo section to create a cooler environment internally, ensuring the comfort of the nocturnal wildlife amidst the extreme heat. The zoo, which currently accommodates around 2,190 animals, birds, and reptiles, is being managed under the guidance of zoo advisor Dr. R.K. Sahu and zoo superintendent Dr. Sharv Shah. Measures include regular cleaning of cages, timely feeding, and continuous monitoring of the animals by the animal keeper staff.
The zoo administration is focused on preventing dehydration and maintaining proper body temperature among the animals and birds. They have provided shelters to shield the animals from direct sunlight and are adding glucose and ORS powder to drinking water as needed to ensure hydration levels are maintained. Veterinary doctors are conducting routine inspections and observing animal behavior for signs of stress or discomfort due to the heat, taking necessary preventive actions.
Exotic species, known to be more susceptible to extreme summer conditions, are receiving intensified care at the zoo. Vaccination drives, deworming procedures, medical check-ups, and monitoring rounds have been increased. The animals’ diet has been adjusted to include fruits and food items with high water and glucose content like watermelon, musk melon, and sugarcane as part of the summer feeding program. The zoo, open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer vacation season, is expected to welcome nearly 3 lakh visitors, offering amenities like drinking water stations, shaded areas, and air coolers for visitor comfort.
