Tamil Nadu’s opposition party AIADMK is gearing up to convene its Working Committee meeting sooner than usual next month. The party’s General Secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, is expected to utilize the meeting to reinforce the organization, tackle internal dissent, and lay out strategies for the upcoming local body elections. Normally, recognized political parties are mandated to hold a General Council meeting annually and Working Committee meetings biannually.

Traditionally, the AIADMK has combined its Working Committee and General Council meetings in December. However, this year, sources suggest that the Working Committee meeting might be advanced to August, several months ahead of schedule. This decision follows mounting organizational hurdles post the party’s defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

In recent weeks, Palaniswami has been conducting review meetings with district-level office-bearers to evaluate the party’s performance and readiness. These consultations, spanning all 85 organizational districts of the AIADMK, were concluded on July 25. Notably, several senior leaders were absent from these meetings, prompting the party leadership to consider seeking explanations from those who skipped.

Palaniswami is anticipated to engage in dialogues with dissenting leaders to resolve internal differences. Those unwilling to cooperate may face disciplinary measures, potentially including expulsion. Additionally, the AIADMK chief is likely to appoint new office-bearers to fill vacant posts as part of a broader restructuring initiative to fortify the party machinery for future electoral contests, especially the impending local body elections.
