The AIADMK faced another blow as P. Dhanapal, a seasoned party member and former Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker, announced his departure due to lack of recognition and discontent with the current leadership. This exit comes amidst existing internal turmoil and dissatisfaction among senior leaders following the party’s poor performance in recent elections. Dhanapal revealed his decision after attending his son’s ministerial induction in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government.
Expressing disappointment with the treatment he received within the AIADMK, Dhanapal criticized the leadership for overlooking many leaders, including himself. He highlighted the disconnect between the party leadership and the public, suggesting that internal neglect has contributed to the party’s current state. The 76-year-old leader, with over four decades of political experience, expressed deep concern over the party’s condition, despite his longstanding association with it.
Dhanapal, a significant figure in Tamil Nadu politics, served as the Assembly Speaker from 2012 to 2021 and held various ministerial roles over the years. Having been elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly seven times, he is recognized as one of the party’s seasoned members. His departure, following another veteran’s resignation, S. Semmalai, raises concerns about unity and leadership stability within the AIADMK as it strives to regroup post-election defeat.
