The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is seeking applications from retired footballers to be part of its Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) roster. This initiative aligns with the National Sports Governance Act recently adopted by the federation. The AIFF plans to establish separate rosters for 20 male and 20 female Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit, with four members, two men, and two women, joining the federation’s General Body.
Former players interested in applying must be Indian citizens, at least 25 years old, mentally sound, and retired from competitive play. They should not have been involved in any district, state, or national selection events for a year before applying. Eligibility criteria are tier-based, with the highest tier reserved for Olympic or Paralympic medallists. Other tiers include athletes who have participated in multiple Olympic or Paralympic Games or other major competitions like the World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
In a departure from previous procedures, the AIFF now allows ex-players to apply directly without requiring nominations from state or union territory football associations. Applicants must submit a completed application form, along with supporting documents such as proof of age, citizenship, and eligibility under the tier system. The AIFF encourages member associations, clubs, and academies to disseminate the notification widely among former footballers to enhance awareness and participation.
Applications, whether physical or digital, are open until September 13, 2026, ahead of the AIFF’s upcoming elections in December. These elections will see the appointment of new office-bearers in accordance with the National Sports Governance Act.
