One year after the Air India flight AI-171 crash, investigators are still conducting technical evaluations and analysis. The probe into the disaster, which claimed 260 lives, remains ongoing. Families of the victims are eagerly awaiting definitive answers about the tragic incident.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) recently issued an interim statement on the first anniversary of the accident. The agency reported significant progress in examining various aspects related to the Boeing 787-8 involved in the crash. However, no new technical findings or conclusions have been released yet.
According to the AAIB, evidence collected over the past year is undergoing comprehensive analysis. Further specialized examinations will be conducted as needed. The final report will be made public only after all investigative activities and international reviews are completed as per ICAO Annex 13 requirements.
Aviation lawyer Mike Andrews, representing over 135 affected families, expressed disappointment over the lack of new information in the recent statement. He emphasized the need to await the official findings while continuing their own research and evaluation.
The tragic AI-171 disaster occurred on June 12, 2025, shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft crashed less than a minute after departure while en route to London Gatwick. Of the 242 individuals on board, 241 lost their lives, along with 19 individuals on the ground, bringing the total death toll to 260.
The preliminary report released last year by the AAIB highlighted the movement of engine fuel control switches, leading to a loss of fuel supply to both engines. However, the report did not determine the cause behind the switch movement, leaving investigators to delve deeper into technical, operational, and human factors involved in the accident.
Despite expectations of the final report around the crash anniversary, investigators have cited unfinished analysis, particularly concerning engine-related evidence. The complexity of the investigation has caused delays in report completion. The AAIB reiterated its commitment to a thorough, independent investigation to ensure final conclusions and safety recommendations are based on evidence.
