Badruddin Ajmal-led opposition party AIUDF in Assam faced a setback as its MLA from Cachar district, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, resigned before the state’s upcoming Assembly elections. Barbhuiya announced his decision on social media after consulting with various societal groups for peace and harmony. While he did not disclose his future political intentions, there are rumors that he might join Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP, and contest from the Sonai Assembly seat.
Barbhuiya, who has been associated with AIUDF for years and is known for his proximity to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, holds significance in the Barak Valley region. His departure from AIUDF comes amidst a period of political realignments in Assam as parties gear up for the elections. The move is seen as potentially influencing local dynamics, especially in Sonai, where party affiliations often impact electoral results.
Barbhuiya, a key political figure in southern Assam, won the Sonai constituency in the 2021 elections, marking a crucial victory for AIUDF in the Barak Valley. His resignation is expected to have repercussions in the region, with observers suggesting that his future actions could shape the political landscape as parties strategize for the upcoming polls. As of now, AIUDF leadership has not officially responded to Barbhuiya’s exit.
