While the India-Afghanistan Test match progresses in New Chandigarh, attention shifts to Mumbai where the senior national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will meet at the BCCI headquarters to decide on India’s T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The selection committee, headed by Agarkar, will also announce India’s ‘A’ squad for the red-ball series against Sri Lanka and shortlist players for the Men’s T20 event at the Asian Games in Japan.
The focal point of the meeting will be the discussion on the future of the T20I captaincy, with Suryakumar Yadav’s performance under scrutiny. Suryakumar’s recent form, especially in the IPL and T20 World Cup, raises questions about his captaincy role as he approaches 36 years of age. Shreyas Iyer emerges as a strong contender to replace Suryakumar, given his successful leadership stints in various domestic T20 competitions.
Apart from Iyer, other potential candidates for the T20I captaincy include Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson. Deliberations will also involve the inclusion of promising talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Rajat Patidar in the T20I team, considering their impressive performances in the recent IPL season. Additionally, discussions may revolve around sending senior players to the shadow ‘A’ tour ahead of the Test series in Sri Lanka for acclimatization purposes.
