Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav is revising an acronym he created, known as “PDA,” to appeal to a broader voter base in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Initially representing “Pichda” (backward), Dalit (oppressed), and Alpsankhyak (minority) groups, the new acronym aims to balance the party’s focus on minorities without losing support from its traditional Muslim-Yadav (MY) base. Recent elections have highlighted the significant influence of women voters, prompting a shift in political strategies towards a narrative inclusive of women, symbolized by an “A for ‘aadhi aabadi’ (half of the population)” approach.
Efforts to redefine the acronym intensified after the Bihar elections, with Akhilesh Yadav emphasizing support for neglected and oppressed ASHA workers, particularly women. Advocating for economic and social security for women, he called for the implementation of the Women Reservation Act, 2023, which proposes a one-third quota for women in Parliament and Assemblies. The Samajwadi Party’s stance on women’s empowerment has been complex, with past demands for separate reservations for Muslim women, citing social and economic disparities. This move, seen as a strategic electoral tactic, aims to consolidate Muslim votes in the upcoming elections.
Despite opposition from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on religion-based reservations, the Samajwadi Party remains firm on its stance, advocating for distinct quotas for Muslim women. The party’s historical resistance to the Women’s Reservation Bill, even during previous regimes, reflects its push for a “quota within quota” system for OBC and minority women. The SP’s alignment with the Opposition in voting against certain bills, while supporting the principle of reservation, underscores its nuanced approach towards women’s representation in legislative bodies.
