All India Muslim Jamaat President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi expressed satisfaction on Saturday as the 10-day observance of Muharram ended peacefully. He credited the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, for maintaining law and order, ensuring a smooth conduct of the festival. Razvi commended the government and police officials for their efforts in making necessary arrangements, preventing any disruptions during the period.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, was observed nationwide with devotees participating in religious processions and events. This period, associated with Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala. The observance involves religious gatherings, mourning processions, and prayer meetings in various parts of India and globally.
The term “Muharram” translates to “forbidden,” marking it as one of Islam’s four sacred months when warfare is traditionally prohibited. Muslims are encouraged to intensify worship, prayer, and reflection during this holy month. Additionally, Muharram signifies the start of the Islamic New Year, based on a lunar calendar where each month begins with the sighting of the new moon.
