Serious allegations of cash distribution to voters have emerged in various constituencies in Coimbatore city before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A formal complaint has been made, requesting the cancellation of polling in Coimbatore South. Lawyers representing the AIADMK candidate, Amman Arjunan, met Election Observer Pratap Singh to highlight alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
According to the complaint, unidentified individuals, believed to be from Karur district, have been going door-to-door in Coimbatore South, distributing cash to voters. The petition also claims that recipients are being pressured and threatened to vote for a specific political party in exchange for money. The legal team argues that such actions are not isolated incidents but are widespread in the constituency, posing a serious threat to electoral norms.
The lawyers have urged the Election Commission to take immediate and strict action, potentially including the cancellation of polling in Coimbatore South if the violations are substantiated. They emphasized that fair elections cannot be guaranteed when voters are allegedly influenced through bribery and intimidation. The petition also raises concerns about illicit financial activities related to the election, including suspected money laundering and unaccounted cash flow.
With the Tamil Nadu polls set for April 23, election authorities are facing mounting pressure to address these complaints promptly and enforce the Model Code of Conduct rigorously. Officials are expected to investigate the allegations and take necessary actions to verify the claims. These developments highlight the increasing worries about electoral malpractices in crucial constituencies, despite authorities reaffirming their dedication to conducting transparent and fair elections statewide.
