Allegations of sexual exploitation of a female inmate at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi have caused a political uproar in Jharkhand. The issue has escalated to the Governor after the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha sought a high-level investigation and action. Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority and the district administration have launched separate inquiries in response to the allegations.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi brought the matter to light by writing to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, urging an investigation into the alleged involvement of the Jail Superintendent and other officials. The BJP has also weighed in, demanding a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge and the immediate suspension of the IG, Jails, and the Superintendent.
Following directives from JHALSA, a special team from the District Legal Services Authority visited the jail to record the alleged victim’s statement. The Jail Superintendent, Kumar Chandrashekhar, has refuted the allegations, stating that the inmate, whom he claims is drug-addicted, had threatened to make false accusations after being denied certain privileges in the jail.
A medical examination supervised by a female doctor found no evidence of pregnancy in the inmate. Additionally, an administrative inquiry committee, led by Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri, has begun its investigation. The Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha has emphasized the need for a fair probe and strict action against any wrongdoers, should the allegations be proven true.
