Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried recently disclosed that her rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “California” on “The Tonight Show” was not a random occurrence. Seyfried, known for her Oscar-nominated roles, had been linked to portraying the iconic singer-songwriter in a biopic. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she dedicated time to mastering Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ album on dulcimer, piano, and guitar in anticipation of the film.
Seyfried recounted her interaction with Mitchell, where she was invited to the singer’s Los Angeles residence for a steak dinner. The two bonded over listening to “Blue” together, with Seyfried cherishing the experience. Despite learning Mitchell’s classics like ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘The Circle Game,’ the biopic project did not materialize. Nonetheless, Seyfried expressed pride in her musical achievement, emphasizing the emotional significance of completing the album.
While Seyfried’s involvement in the Mitchell biopic did not come to fruition, director Cameron Crowe is now overseeing a separate project on Mitchell’s life. The upcoming biopic is expected to feature Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep portraying different stages of the singer’s life, showcasing a new perspective on Mitchell’s remarkable journey.
