On Thiruvalluvar Day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar. Shah praised Thiruvalluvar’s life and works for embodying the highest virtues of civilization and guiding towards a harmonious society. Modi encouraged reading the Tirukkural to appreciate Thiruvalluvar’s intellect and cultural significance.

Thiruvalluvar, a revered figure, lived around two thousand years ago in Mylapore, present-day Chennai. Belonging to the Valluva caste, he was known for his wisdom and contributions to Tamil culture. Thiruvalluvar’s teachings emphasized moral values, governance principles, and universal ethics, as reflected in his renowned work, the Tirukkural.

Scholars have debated Thiruvalluvar’s birthplace and era, with varying accounts suggesting different timelines and locations. Despite these uncertainties, Thiruvalluvar’s legacy endures as a symbol of spiritual excellence and ethical clarity. His teachings on leading a righteous life while fulfilling familial duties continue to inspire generations and shape societal values.
