Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He introduced the ‘Vision Document on Narcotics Control’ aimed at safeguarding the nation from drug-related issues. Shah highlighted the critical phase in India’s battle against drugs, stressing the importance of the next three years in fortifying the anti-narcotics campaign.
June 26 holds significance for India, as mentioned by Shah. This day marks the birth anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, a revered figure in Indian literature. Shah praised Chattopadhyay’s role in boosting the country’s morale during British rule and gifting India the iconic composition ‘Vande Mataram’. The Home Minister emphasized that ‘Vande Mataram’ symbolizes India’s cultural identity, patriotism, and historical struggle for freedom.
Shah underlined that combating narcotics is not solely a law enforcement issue but a critical challenge affecting the nation’s future. He called for a united effort by governments, departments, spiritual leaders, youth, and women to combat drug abuse effectively. Stressing the need for societal involvement, Shah urged every segment of society to join forces in the fight against drugs.
The Home Minister urged state Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police to actively engage in the National Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) meetings. He emphasized the importance of turning these gatherings into productive sessions through efficient decision implementation and continuous evaluation. Shah highlighted the significance of real-time information sharing and encouraged states to utilize digital portals for timely updates on drug-related cases.
Shah acknowledged the evolving nature of narcotics networks, posing challenges to law enforcement. He emphasized the necessity for a modern, technology-driven strategy to dismantle these networks effectively. The Home Minister reiterated the government’s firm stance against drug traffickers while advocating for a compassionate approach towards individuals struggling with drug addiction.
