Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated 101 Oxygen Parks and a new Heritage Park in Ahmedabad as part of the ‘Green Lok Sabha Campaign’ and ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. Shah encouraged people to plant trees in honor of their mothers or gurus, aiming to turn this into a nationwide movement. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) highlighted that the Oxygen Parks aim to enhance green cover, air quality, and provide accessible green spaces in the city.
The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s environmental efforts and the vision for a greener Ahmedabad. The Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency has seen an 11.25% rise in tree density through sustained plantation drives and awareness programs under the ‘Hariyali Lok Sabha Abhiyan’. This increase in greenery is expected to lead to cleaner air, a healthier environment, and a more sustainable future.
The Oxygen Parks have been meticulously planned, utilizing native tree species suited to the local climate and biodiversity. The Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency now boasts a network of 73 Oxygen Parks, including garden-cum-oxygen parks and newly developed urban forests. The AMC announced a massive plantation drive with over 1.25 crore saplings to be planted on July 12 to further enhance the green cover.
The Heritage Park, developed in partnership with Torrent’s UNM Foundation, showcases Ahmedabad’s history across five themed sections. Situated along the Sabarmati River, the park narrates the city’s historical journey, from dynasties to urban expansion and cultural heritage. Designed to encapsulate Ahmedabad’s rich history and cultural essence, the Heritage Park aims to celebrate the city’s status as India’s first ‘World Heritage City’.
