Union Home Minister Amit Shah has promised assistance to J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following devastating flash floods in Poonch and Rajouri districts, resulting in ten deaths and numerous missing individuals. The Lower Murrah area of Surankote in Poonch district suffered the most, with floodwaters and landslides causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure, with families trapped under debris. Rescue operations involving various teams are underway despite challenging weather conditions and terrain, aiming to locate and aid those affected.
The heavy rainfall not only claimed lives but also caused extensive destruction to roads, bridges, homes, and public infrastructure in Poonch and Rajouri. Efforts to clear debris and restore access to affected villages are ongoing, with relief teams working to assist affected families and ensure their safety. Authorities have cautioned residents living near water bodies and landslide-prone areas to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
As rescue and relief operations persist amidst intermittent rainfall, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings of further heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in Jammu & Kashmir over the next five days. Flash floods, landslides, and other risks are anticipated until July 23, prompting continued vigilance and preparedness. Omar Abdullah has personally overseen relief efforts, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive response to alleviate the plight of those impacted by the floods.
